Multiply with equal groups.
Multiplication counts equal-sized groups. An array arranges the objects in rows and columns so that each group has the same size.
When this helps
Useful for learning the meaning of multiplication and connecting repeated addition to a times-table fact.
A common slip
Add the group size repeatedly; adding the number of groups to the group size gives a different quantity.
Worked example
5 × 2 =
How many objects are in one group?

5How many groups are there?
Read the second factor as the number of groups.
2How many objects are in two groups?
Combine two groups of the same size.
