Department for Education: Year 3, Number — Addition and subtraction ↗
Source edition: GOV.UK programmes of study, updated 28 September 2021. Pack 1.0.0.
For teachers & parents
Begin with two digits if the learner needs support. Align ones under ones, tens under tens and hundreds under hundreds. Ask the learner to estimate before calculating, then use the inverse operation to check.
A common slip
A carried ten belongs in the tens column. Add it once when you reach that column. A sum of two three-digit numbers may need a thousands column.
Try column subtraction →8 + 6 makes 14: write 4 ones and carry 1 ten. 4 + 7 + 1 makes 12: carry 1 hundred. 3 + 2 + 1 makes 6 hundreds.
Check:624 − 276 = 348.
