THE LEARNING BEHIND THE SHEET

Understand every exchange.

Use written column methods to add and subtract numbers with up to three digits.

This resource targets the statutory England Year 3 written-addition and subtraction objective. Schools can sequence content flexibly within the key stage. It covers selected arithmetic skills, rather than the whole Year 3 curriculum.

Department for Education: Year 3, Number — Addition and subtraction ↗

Source edition: GOV.UK programmes of study, updated 28 September 2021. Pack 1.0.0.

For teachers & parents

Begin with two digits if the learner needs support. Align ones under ones, tens under tens and hundreds under hundreds. Ask the learner to estimate before calculating, then use the inverse operation to check.

A common slip

When exchanging across zero, exchange a hundred for ten tens first. Then exchange one of those tens for ten ones: nine tens remain. Avoid subtracting the smaller digit from the larger regardless of position.

Exchange 1 hundred for 10 tens, then 1 ten for 10 ones. The top number is now 4 hundreds, 9 tens and 13 ones. Subtract each column.

Check:225 + 278 = 503.
