Add mixed numbers

Department for Education: mathematics programmes of study ↗

For teachers and parents

Rename each mixed number as an improper fraction. For addition or subtraction use a common denominator; for multiplication multiply the numerator by the whole number. Simplify and check the result against an estimate.

A common slip

Exchange one whole when needed in subtraction. Multiplication by a whole number does not multiply the denominator.
