Brackets and operation priority

Department for Education: mathematics programmes of study ↗

For teachers and parents

Evaluate brackets first. Multiplication and division have equal priority and are evaluated from left to right; then evaluate addition and subtraction from left to right. Write one intermediate calculation at a time.

A common slip

Multiplication does not always come before division. Work left to right among operations of the same priority.
